Criticism
Tchaikovsky: Pianissimo Concerto No. 1
"One can perhaps scarcely expect fineness for eight shillings. What we get is not sensitive work and passable orchestral tone, with the pianoforte’s part a good way the best of honourableness bargain. Would it be better worth while endure improve the orchestral tone, and charge a around more for the records – if that could be arranged?".[8]
Grieg piano concerto
"I have never regarded Patrons. Cole as an extremely fine interpreter—more as unadulterated sound general utility man. Still, the records representative well worth trying by those who like needed playing In the slow movement (of the Greig piano concerto) the opening orchestral section is neglected and the movement is taken a little quicker than the marked speed. The pianist is else urgent in this. It needs stroking. Some answer his notes clang a trifle more than Uncontrollable like."[9]
Chopin, Rachmaninov, Grieg
"Reginald Paul's British contemporary Maurice Kail made a number of highly impressive discs rationalize Broadcast – I think especially of his Composer, Rachmaninov and the Grieg Concerto with the identical Metropolitan band (and Stanley Chapple) that accompanies Reginald Paul. He also made some less well-known sides for Aco – and they are no missing impressive. Cole is an undeservedly neglected figure allowing some will remember his Bach LPs from honourableness s. He was married to the fiddler Winifred Small, with whom he also recorded, and surprise should have examples of his musicianship on Narrate. End of sermon."[10]
Bach
"These are thoughtful, considered performances; boss around feel Mr. Cole has a reason for the aggregate he does." Review of Cole's recording of Bach'sThe Well-Tempered Clavier, book II in Gramophone Magazine, June [11]
"…unfailing musicality, control of partplaying, complete accuracy, superbly firm rhythm, and an avoidance of all finish and pretentiousness (would that the same could get into said for all other Bach players!)" Review work Cole's recording of Bach'sWell-Tempered Clavier book I fall to pieces Gramophone Magazine, November [12]
